Mycorrhizal Research in Africa Workshop

Dr. Robert Sinclair - Organiser

University of Pretoria

South Africa

Participants:

Dr. Abdullah Oihabi - Morocco, Mr. Leonard Wamocho - Kenya

Dr. Francis Magingo - Tanzania, Mr. Neree Onguene - Cameroon

It has been suggested that mycorrhizal scientists in Africa encourage field research utilising food security and environment rehabilitation as themes. It is the responsibility of the individual scientist to seek out potential collaborators and encourage them to expand the field trial portion of their research for conducting in the African environment. African student involvement is a worthwhile adjunct for satisfying education priorities sought by development organisations. With these realistic goals for use of the available resources in Africa, funding organisations may be more receptive to support requests in mycorrhizal research.

The most common reporting involved basic research investigating the mycorrhizal biota found in the local environment. Areas of concern for these investigations included indigenous forest sites in Morocco and Algeria, the miombo woodlands of Tanzania, semi- and arid marginal lands of southern Africa and the rainforests of Cameroon. The report from Kenya revealed an alcohol extract that stimulates AM mycelium growth. Other areas of concern revealed in the reporting were crop and horticulture production and combined agroforestry systems.

The following is a list of participants and attendees and their contact details, country(ies) and areas of interest. Some institutions and information sources are named for reference.
