We have attempted to put together a wide selection of excursions to cater for all interests. Availability of these trips will be subject to there being sufficient interest. Numbers of places on some trips will be limited - so book your excursion early!
1. Historical Uppsala

Explore the historic sites of Uppsala together with skilful local guides. Visit the 800 year old cathedral (where the type specimen of Homo sapiens is kept), Rudbeckius'famous anatomical theatre Gustavianum from the 1600s, the royal castle from 1550, the University founded in 1477 and the viking burial mounds at Old Uppsala 1500 years old. 2. In Carl von Linné's and Elias Fries' footsteps
Cost: 330 SEK, includes transportation, entrance fees, and lunch Duration: full day Approximate travel time: bus 1.5 hour.
Follow in the footsteps of Carl von Linné (Linnaeus) and Elias Fries for a day! We will visit Linné's home and garden in Uppsala, the Botanical Department where Linné and Fries worked, Linné's summer cottage and garden outside Uppsala. The tour also includes a botanical excursion along one of Linné's Herbationes (botanical excursion) near Uppsala.
3. Linné's summer cottage at Hammarby and Skokloster Castle
Cost: 400 SEK, includes transportation, entrance fees and lunch Duration: full dayApproximate travel time: Veteran bus 1 hour, steamboat 2 hours.
Travel through the county around Uppsala in an old Veteran bus, visit Linné's summer cottage and garden, and the well kept 1700-century Skokloster castle with intact interior. Guided tour at both places. Two hour steamboat trip (drinks available), back on Lake Mälaren to the centre of Uppsala.
4. The Swedish Archipelago
Cost: 460 SEK, includes transportation and lunch Duration: full day Approximate travel time: bus 3 hours, boat 4 hours.
Travel through the beautiful Swedish archipelago in the Baltic sea when the flora and fauna is at its best and the weather most enjoyable. Just outside Stockholm and Uppsala, the archipelago consists of almost 10 000 islands. Half day travel in fishing boats and half day visit to one island.
5. Stockholm - on your own
Cost: 330 SEK, includes train tickets (trains leave every 30 minutes), the Stockholm card giving free access to most museums and other attractions and pamphlets and maps. Duration: full day (last train leaves Stockholm about 11 p.m) Approximate travel time: train 50 minutes from the centre of Uppsala to Stockolm.
Be your own guide and visit the capital of Sweden! Includes train tickets and the Stockholm-card which covers entrance-fees for most museums and sights.
6. Örskär - Nature reserve island in the outer archipelago
Cost: 290 SEK, includes transportation and picnic lunch Duration: full day Approximate travel time: bus 3 hours, boat 2 times 20 minutes.
Explore an uninhabited and contemplative nature reserve island in the outermost archipelago in the Baltic sea. Diverse plant life (old pine forest, lime rich soil, e.g. 18 orchid species) rich bird life and magnificent scenery. Hike by yourself or join the biological and cultural guides.
7. Limes Norlandicus
Cost: 300 SEK, includes transportation and lunch. Duration: full day Approximate travel time: bus 3 hours
A tour to one of Sweden's major rivers, River Dalälven 60 km north Uppsala, often referred to as "Limes Norlandicus" where the northerly distribution of many plants stops, e.g. oaks. We will hike in a large area with old growth forests and interesting riparian environments that will become a national park in 1998.
8. The Walloon iron works in northern Uppland
Cost: 350 SEK, includes transportation entrance fees, lunch and guides. Duration: full day Approximate travel time: bus 3 hours
The export of iron has been central to the Swedish economy for several centuries. Uppland was one of the centres of production and has many well kept mills, mansions and villages from the 17th century when skillful walloon blacksmiths were brought here from Belgium. We will visit the forge at Österbybruk and the well preserved village and mansion at Lövsta bruk. Guided tours at both places
9. Forests and forestry in Sweden
Cost: 360 SEK, includes transportation and lunch. Duration: full day Approximate travel time: bus 2.5 hours
The tour includes a half day visit to an oldgrowth forest and a half day study of how Swedish forestry management is conducted, particularly how environmental aspects are considered. The excursion will be led by an ecologist and a forest company representative.
10. Ethnomycology
Cost: 470 SEK includes transportation, all material, supervison and lunch. Duration: full day Approximate travel time: vans 1.5 hour.
"Hands on" course in how to dye wool with fungi and how to make tinder from Fomes fomentarius for lightning a fire! This takes place on a small farm with all kinds of animals located in an old agricultural landscape near Sala, 50 km west of Uppsala.
11. Birka - a Viking town on an island in Lake Mälaren
Cost: 550 SEK, includes transportation, entrance fees, guide and lunch Duration: full day Approximate travel time: Bus 45 min, boat 30 min, bus and train 1.5 h.
A visit to the remains of the Viking town of Birka, located on the island Björkön in Lake Mälaren. This is the place where Sweden was converted to Christianity in 830 by Ansgar. Bus from Uppsala, about 90 minutes boat trip to Birka with museum and excavations, boat to Stockholm with the possibility for a short visit there and individual travel back by train to Uppsala.
