The main conference sessions will take place on the Ultuna campus of the
Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), 5 km south of Uppsala.
Uppsala is within easy reach of Stockholm
(60 km) and Helsinki (12 h by boat)
and post conference tourist excursions will be available for those interested.
Language
The Conference language is English. No simultaneous translation will be provided.
Conference Venues and Transport
Registration will take place on Sunday 5th of July at the SLU campus. Participants displaying posters should put these up after registering. The Welcome Reception will take place at the Botanical Gardens behind the castle, in the city centre.
All scientific sessions, the poster exhibition and the trade exhibition will take place in the Main Lecture Building (Undervisningshuset) at Ultuna. There will also be a registration and information desk serving speakers and delegates during the conference.
Uppsala is situated 35 km north of Stockholm-Arlanda airport. Uppsala is only a 30 min bus ride from Stockholm airport: buses run every 30 min throughout the day and evening. There will be special conference buses arranged daily to and from the hotels. More details will be provided in the confirmation letter.

To avoid a long wait on Monday morning before the opening ceremonies, the organisers strongly recommend that you register on Sunday.

The Conference Fee for delegates and students includes: Welcome Reception, Barbeque, admission to the Scientific Sessions and the exhibition, documentation, lunches and refreshments during July 5-10, daily bus transportation from the hotel to the Conference Venue and back.
The accompanying persons fee includes: Welcome Reception, Opening Ceremonies, Barbeque and a Tourist Information Pack.
Accommodation
Accommodation has been reserved at four central city hotels in various price categories and at a low budget hotel nearby Ultuna, the university campus. Hotel categories and special discount room rates are valid only for this conference and when booking is made through the Conference Secretariat. All prices include a generous breakfast. Category B includes two low budget hotels where guests have access to cooking facilities. The hotel rooms will be booked on a first come - first served basis. The hotel reservation is effective upon receipt of a deposit of SEK 500 per person - irrespective of the choice of category. This deposit will be credited against the total cost of your accommodation. You will pay the balance of the hotel bill directly to the hotel. All prices include V.A.T. The organisers cannot guarantee accommodation if reservations are made later than March 30, 1998.

Climate and Clothing
The weather in Uppsala in July is usually mild and sunny with occasional showers. The average mid-day temperature is 18-25°C. Evenings might sometimes be chilly. The organisers suggest that you bring along a warm sweater and an umbrella or raincoat. There is no dress code for the Conference. The Welcome Reception and the Dinner are festive events but no formal dress is required.
Insurance, Vaccinations
The conference fee does not cover insurance for delegates or accompanying persons. The organisers strongly recommend that participants take out insurance in their own country to cover pre-journey cancellation for personal reasons and all necessary insurance against the customary risks, but particularly accident, medical expenses and loss of personal belongings during their visit. No vaccinations are needed in Sweden.
Passports, Visas
Delegates are advised to contact the nearest Swedish embassy or consulate or travel agency to find out the passport and visa requirements for entry into Sweden.
The Swedish monetary unit is the Swedish krona (SEK), divided into 100 öres. In mid January 1998, USD 1 = ca SEK 8. Major credit cards are accepted in most shops and restaurants.
Confirmation
Confirmation of registration and accommodation reservations will be sent to each delegate after March 30, provided full payment has been received.
Cancellation
All eventual cancellations must be sent in writing to the Conference Secretariat.
If cancellation is received before May 31, your payment (minus 500 SEK for administration costs) will be refunded. No refunds can be made for cancellations made after May 31, 1998.
Refunds will be paid after the conference.
Social programme
Welcome Reception, 5 July
This event is included in the registration fee. The city of Uppsala and the conference organisers welcome you to a reception in the beautiful Botanical Gardens. A light meal will be served. The garden used to be part of the royal garden, but was donated to Uppsala university by the king in the late 18th century. Department of systematic Botany is situated in Linneaum, which was built 1807, 100 years after the birth of Linnaeus. Carl Peter Thunberg and Elias Fries are some famous professors from this department. Department of physiological botany where Elias Melin and Nils Fries used to work is also situated in the garden.
Barbecue, 6 July
This event is included in the registration fee. The party will be held at the Ultuna campus.
Concert in the Cathedral followed by a Pub evening
Traditional Nordic folk music from the eighteenth century featuring keyed fiddle, or nyckelharpa ( a local speciality). The magnificent organ of the 600 year old cathedral will accompany, providing a unique combination that Linnaeus himself also experienced. Price SEK 60. The concert will be followed by an informal get-together at some nearby Uppsala pubs.
Wines of the world, 9 July
Repeat the success of the Berkeley meeting. Contribute by bringing a bottle (or two) of wine from your country or you may be forced to drink Swedish wine!
Conference banquet at Uppsala Castle, 10 July
Price SEK 400. The magnificent Castle of Uppsala from the 1550's provides an excellent scene for our Banquet with some Swedish gourmet specialities and entertainment.
